We know how it is, schools are closed and you’re running out of fresh ideas for things to do with kids at home (and trying to maintain your sanity). As social distancing is becoming a regular part of our lives, we are always looking for more ways to pass the time...but why not ditch the screen time and check out these creative ideas you can do with materials you probably already have around your house!
1) Sidewalk Chalk Art
A really easy and fun way to get outside with your kids is to create some art on the sidewalk! From rainbows to animals, the possibilities are endless. It is the PERFECT at home summertime hobby! Want to add some extra fun? Stencils work great with chalk---you can even make your own stencils out of cardboard!
2) Rock Painting
You’ve seen it on Pinterest, you’ve seen it on social media, but do you know how easy it is? Pluck out a few rocks from your yard and grab some acrylic paint---you are all set for this fun craft! Some of our favorites feature popular Pokemon characters, Harry Potter symbols, and Disney (Google Frozen rock painting, I dare you). Rock painting ranks high on our list for fun things to do with kids at home!
3) Treasure Hunt
Planning a family scavenger hunt at home has never been so easy! This creative activity can be done inside the house on a rainy day, or outside in the sunshine when the quarantine is getting the best of you. You can search for unique clues (and free!) online or create your own, based on the abilities and ages of the children playing. Even better, this one is educational---what a fun way to practice reading comprehension!
4) Pottery Painting
You didn’t think we’d forget about this at home hobby, did you? Pottery for kids is definitely one of the best creative things to do with kids at home. Pottery To Go allows you to bring all the fun right to your home! Not only will you be able to occupy the kids for hours, but they will be able to treasure their project for years to come. The Mad Potter has THREE ZERO CONTACT options to choose from, pick up at one of our locations, have a team member deliver it directly to your home, or we can ship it to you. It doesn’t get easier than that! Unleash your inner artist, and we’ll do the rest. When you’re finished, we will glaze and fire your masterpiece and have it ready for you in four days.
5) Window Art
Window Decorating is a great way to show support in your local community, we’re all in this together, after all. All you need is some fun-colored construction paper! Hearts and Rainbows are popular designs going around to show hope but let’s expand on that and include some summertime classics like butterflies and flowers. This is a great at home activity to shine some light on the neighborhood.
Well, there you have it, 5 creative things to do with kids at home and NONE include screen time! These times are scary but remember, we will get through this together. And in the meantime, we hope you stay busy with these fun stay at home crafts!
